about:

Pillars Cafe grew out of the rebuilding of Oxford Terrace Baptist Church after its historic building was destroyed in the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes. Five large, broken pillars from the old church remain at the front of the site. They have become both a local landmark and the inspiration for the cafe’s name, holding the story of what was lost and what has grown in its place. Today, Pillars is a welcoming community cafe with a heart for sustainability and positive change. It supports local and ethical suppliers, including Common Good Coffee, which helps fund Joyya’s work in communities affected by extreme poverty and modern slavery in Kolkata. At its heart, Pillars seeks to be salt and light in the city through hospitality, generosity and everyday choices that do good.

We worked closely with the Pillars team to create a warm, distinctive brand grounded in community, history and purpose. A custom typeface was developed especially for Pillars, giving the identity a personal and recognisable voice across its signage, communications and digital presence. Typography, illustration, photography, and messaging were brought together to tell one clear story: Pillars is more than a cafe. It is a place of welcome, connection and hope, shaped by the past and created to serve its community.

Working with the team at Vine Design has been an excellent experience. We felt listened to throughout the whole process, and our vision was brought to life with amazing graphic designs that were produced quickly and professionally.
