At first, it just sounded clever. But the more I sat with it, the more it rang true.
Tim wasn’t just talking about billboards or branding. He believed that the God who created galaxies deserved creativity at its finest. That if we were going to communicate something about God, or about the organisations doing His work, it should be done with the utmost care, craft and beauty. That comment has shaped how I’ve approached design, and how I communicate about God, ever since.
Tragically, Tim died in a motorbike accident in Nepal around eight years later. But his words never left me. In many ways, Vine was born out of his dream. His influence laid the groundwork for what we do today, using thoughtful, strategic design to serve those working for God’s justice, mercy and transformation.
And it’s not a new idea either. Way back in the Old Testament, we meet Bezalel, the artisan chosen by God to design the Tabernacle, the sacred space where His presence would dwell. What’s remarkable is that Bezalel is the first person in the Bible described as being filled with the Spirit of God, not a prophet, not a king, not a priest, but a craftsman (a designer).
Bezalel wasn’t just skilled. He was filled. Creativity and craftsmanship were spiritual acts. That’s what we believe too. When we design with excellence and purpose, we reflect the heart of the Creator.
Design, done well, does more than make things look good. It creates clarity. It builds trust. It tells a story. In our line of work, good design can help an under-resourced mission organisation find its voice, or give a tiny start-up the credibility it needs to grow. At its best, design serves, and in doing so, reflects the character of God Himself.
At Vine, we try to do all our work as if we’re doing it for the Lord. But let’s be honest, we couldn’t do it without you. Your prayers, your backing, your encouragement, they keep us going. There are moments when the weight of the work gets a little heavy, but knowing you’ve got our back makes all the difference.
Arohanui to all of you who stand with us.
